New research!

Artists in the studio working together.
After some lovely studio time, I'm ready to get back to the research!
Mapping Sustainable Careers in the Australian Art Market and Creative Cultural Ecology

It's been a few years since I finished my research on the creative business model canvas and during that time I have been helping creatives understand the value they create and how to share it with others. What became apparent in that time was the lack of information around networking. Everyone says its important, research from entrepreneurial fields supports this idea but very little is known about the networks that exist in Australia. This is crucial to using the Creative Business Model Canvas effectively but artists in Australia have little access to useful information about it. Thats where my new research comes in......

Being an artist in Australia can be really rewarding, but it’s also tough to make a living from art alone. Many artists take on different kinds of work like freelancing, running small businesses, or working for themselves to keep doing what they love. They also rely on strong networks of people and organisations that help support them in their careers.

We know that having good connections is important for anyone trying to build a successful career, especially in creative industries. But no one has really looked closely at the kinds of support networks that help visual artists in Australia succeed.

My new research project looks at the bigger picture who’s helping artists, how those relationships work, and what kind of support systems are out there. It uses surveys and case studies to gather information, and then creates a kind of map to show how all the people, organisations, and opportunities connect. This map also provides the context for using the Creative Business Model Canvas, the world in which the canvas operates.

The goal is to help artists better understand the creative world around them, so they can build stronger careers. The results could also help governments and arts organisations make better decisions about how to support artists in the future.
